Pete Palladino, Director of Operations for Fearless Restaurants, didn’t plan on falling in love with the restaurant business, or with Long Beach Island. However, as he says, the best things in life are happy accidents. “I was living in Philadelphia and started managing the Moshulu,” Pete recalls. “I just quickly fell in love. It was like a puzzle that I just needed to continue to figure out every day.”

“I was living in Philadelphia and started managing the Moshulu,” Pete recalls. “I just quickly fell in love. It was like a puzzle that I just needed to continue to figure out every day.”

Having grown up visiting the island every Summer, when the opportunity came to move to LBI in 2006 to run Plantation and help open Daddy O, Pete didn’t hesitate. This was his beach, where he’d spent his days stand up paddleboarding and relaxing on the sand.

“When you live at the beach, it’s a totally different lifestyle,” he says. “It was life changing for me to be able to live near the water.” Now living in Manahawkin with his wife, Pete still marvels at his good fortune: “I could walk up there and take a look at the waves—so I’m like, well, I can go to Philadelphia, you know what I mean? I might as well live here.”

The Rhythm of LBI

What Pete loves most is the ebb and flow of LBI. “In the summer, it’s bananas. We’re all just trying to hold on,” he laughs. “Then in the off season, you get to recoil, you get your life back, and you get to spend more time with guests and really figure out a way to make this all make sense. I love to figure out problems.”

That problem-solving spirit is infused in everything at Daddy O. Pete and his culinary partner Jeff Alberti are constantly experimenting, inspired by their trips to New York and Philly, by the smells and sights they encounter wandering through neighborhoods. They’re always asking: how do we bring this back to LBI?

No Ego, Just Excitement

“There’s no ego where it’s like, if we try something and it doesn’t work, we’re offended,” Pete insists. “It’s a conversation. Let’s listen to what our guests are saying”

Whether it’s launching espresso martini flights with ten different flavors or introducing Pau Hana Fridays (a Hawaiian term meaning “finished with work” that perfectly captures the surf vibe), the team is constantly pushing themselves to stay inspired.

“If we’re excited about something and you can excite the folks in the kitchen, that excitement flows out into the dining room, and then eventually it flows to the guests,” Pete explains. “It’s got to be fun.”

Giving Back to the Community

Pete brings that personal passion to everything Daddy O does. The restaurant stays open year-round (except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas) as a way to give back to the community that’s supported them.

“When we first opened on LBI, the conversation was always, is it worth it to be open in the winter?” Pete remembers. “And our thought was always, you know what? Yes, because it’s a way to keep everybody engaged and give back to the community that has supported us all summer long.”

Every day features something special: half-price sushi with live music, wine club events, whiskey flights, tequila tastings. As a musician himself, Pete carefully curates the musicians who play Thursday through Saturday, leaning on his booking agent to ensure they’re “awesome musicians, who are super talented.”

Rooted in Gratitude

At Daddy O, everything possible is sourced locally. The menu features scallops from Barnegat Light just up the road (“some of the best scallops in the entire East Coast”), local flounder and tuna, and Jersey’s legendary tomatoes and corn.

Pete draws on the bounty around him, “Here in New Jersey, we’ve got the best of a lot of different worlds. This coastal ecosystem as well as wonderful farms that aren’t too far away.”

After nearly 20 years at Daddy O and a decade at Tucker’s Tavern, Pete’s gratitude remains genuine.

“We love LBI. LBI is just a special place,” he says. “LBI is a different culture than any place else on the Jersey Shore, and we love being part of that ecosystem. We’re super thankful that we’ve been embraced by the community and are still going strong.”

When you walk into Daddy O, you’re not just entering a restaurant, you’re experiencing Pete’s passion for this 18-mile stretch of protected waterway, his love for hospitality, and his commitment to creating something special for the community he calls home. For Pete Palladino, this isn’t just a job. It’s a life he chose, a puzzle he loves solving, and a love affair with LBI that keeps getting better.

A new floral design business is bringing a fresh, artistic approach to Long Beach Island, creating arrangements that are more than just flowers—they’re living sculptures.

When Keisi Met’hoxha and Aylin Miranda first started creating art together eight years ago; painting, building sculptures, doing makeup for friends, they never imagined their shared artistic vision would blossom into Botanika NJ, a floral design business that’s already making waves on Long Beach Island just three weeks after launching.

Where Art Meets Nature

What sets Botanika NJ apart is their unique approach to floral design. Drawing inspiration from European and modern floral traditions, Keisi and Aylin create arrangements that feel more like art installations than traditional bouquets.

“We’re trying to bring something more than just bouquets,” Keisi explains. “When you order a piece from Botanika NJ, it’s a whole live art piece.”

Their designs feature monochromatic color schemes and bold, extravagant compositions that differ dramatically from conventional American floral arrangements. Instead of the standard dozen roses, imagine walking into someone’s home and being greeted by an eye-catching flower box that serves as a living centerpiece.

“We really feel a lot of emotion and expression through creating the arrangements,” Aylin shares. “So we want our arrangements to bring that same emotion and resonate with the client admiring it.”

Community Connection

The business choice to launch on LBI was deeply personal for both founders. Aylin grew up in Beach Haven, attending the local school and appreciating the tight-knit community where teachers know the families and neighbors greet each other at Acme.

“I grew up listening to tourists saying I was so lucky, and I was confused because I thought this was how everyone lived,” Aylin remembered. “Now that I’m older, I see how fortunate I was to live in this community. I feel so connected.”

For Keisi, who immigrated from Albania, discovering LBI felt like finding paradise. “When I first got here, this was heaven,” she recalls. “It didn’t feel like the America I saw in movies. People would say good morning to you at the grocery shop, tell you they loved your outfit. I come from Eastern Europe, so people are a little bit more tough. I told my mom I’m not leaving this place.”

After trying life in New York and other cities, Keisi always found herself drawn back to the supportive, collaborative community of LBI. “There’s no judgment, no hate, just a lot of collaboration. Anything you want to do, they really support you.”

The support of LBI was proven when they were getting their business off the ground. They met with Michelle, former K+Co Living designer and 25-year floral industry professional, to get some insights. She was happy to share advice and create connections to help them get started, which built their confidence and pointed them in new directions.

A Labor of Love and Learning

The duo takes a hands-on approach to sourcing their flowers. They’re committed to staying local when possible, though they acknowledge the challenges New Jersey’s growing zone presents, especially during winter months. They’ve been visiting wholesalers throughout South Jersey and planning trips to North Jersey and New York to find the most unique blooms in the off-season.

“We’re trying to stay monochromatic and choose flowers based on what inspires us that day,” Keisi shares. “If the wholesaler has a lot of greens, whites, and pinks, we’ll stay in that color family. We try to visualize a certain color theme.”

While they follow European and modern floral designers on social media, they’ve discovered that their best work comes from following their own instincts. When they attempt to recreate a Pinterest-inspired bouquet, it inevitably transforms into something uniquely their own.

Personal Service, Artistic Results

Botanika NJ currently operates through a personalized order request system rather than a traditional online cart. This intentional approach allows them to have conversations with each customer about their needs, preferences, and the occasion.

“The flowers are very unique, so it will never be the same,” Keisi notes. “We want to talk to the customer first to ask questions like, what kind of flowers would you like? What is the occasion? We want it to be more of a conversation.”

They offer free delivery throughout LBI and service the Manahawken area, taking orders through their website, Instagram, and email.

Seasonal Specialties

This holiday season, Botanika NJ is featuring their signature flower boxes with a festive twist; roses accented with pine and winter greenery that capture the magic of the holidays. These seasonal flower box or seasonal bouquet arrangements, which Aylin describes as their “bread and butter,” bring a sophisticated seasonal touch to any home. Their pieces are designed to bring art into the home and immediately draw the eye.

Custom floral arrangements for any holiday or celebration can be requested. Since the bouquets and flower boxes are based on which flowers are available, there may be a bit longer wait time while they track down the flowers you want. After hearing your vision, Keisi and Aylin will add their creative expression to deliver a truly unique, extravagant piece.

Looking Ahead

While Botanika is just getting started, the founders have big dreams. They’re exploring the idea of opening a storefront on LBI or just off the bridge in Manahawkin. They’re also planning to expand their demographic reach, including a creative plan to give free bouquets to construction workers around the island, inspired by seeing workers admiring their flowers during a photo shoot.

“We saw construction workers actually looking at our flowers and admiring them,” Keisi remembers. “We felt so bad. We thought, they need a bouquet too, not only women.”

While these arrangements make great gifts, Botanika NJ wants to also normalize flowers as living art for year-round display. There’s no need to wait until a birthday or anniversary and hope for flowers. Anyone can buy these arrangements for themselves, at any time, whenever they feel like adding a bit of natural beauty to their home.

Order Your Living Art

Whether you’re looking for a statement piece, a memorable gift, or a festive holiday arrangement, Botanika NJ offers something truly different. Their flower boxes and custom arrangements bring the sophistication of European floral design to the Jersey Shore, creating pieces that are meant to be admired as the living art they are.

Ready to bring a piece of botanical artistry into your home? Visit Botanika NJ’s websiteor follow them on Instagramor Facebookto inquire about custom arrangements and holiday boxes. They offer free delivery throughout Long Beach Island.

“When you order from us, it’s like a live piece that you’re going to keep in your home—like a living sculpture,” Keisi says. “That’s our main goal, to be represented in that way.”

When you walk into Langs Smokes & Exotics in Long Beach Island, you might expect just another smoke shop. What you’ll find is something much more meaningful: a family-owned wellness center dedicated to education, community, and helping people live better lives.

I sat down with owner Harsh Patel to learn more about his mission to “Make LBI Greener” and how he overcame the negative stigmas set by traditional head shops. What I discovered was a warmhearted family, dedicated to improving people’s quality of life through herbal remedies.

A Family Rooted in LBI

Harsh Patel and his family have been part of the LBI community since 2007, when his parents opened Langs Liquor. Retail has always been in their blood, but it wasn’t until after Covid that Harsh discovered his passion for connecting with the community.

“It’s fun to talk to new people every day,” he shares warmly. “You get to help them find the right products, make sure they’re not buying the wrong products.”

It’s truly a family affair at Langs. Harsh credits his parents for making his dream possible, and expressed gratitude for their support. From helping him file the proper paperwork to watching the shop when he needs to step out for a delivery, his parents have been instrumental its success.

“This business would be nothing without them, I couldn’t do it alone,” he said proudly. “There are, like, my pillars.”

More Than Just a Shop

Despite the name, which was chosen to keep a connection to Langs Liquor, this isn’t your typical smoke shop. In fact, it’s completely smoke-free.

“The focus here is wellness,” Harsh explains with conviction. “It’s to provide education in regards to hemp and THC products, because there’s a lot of misinformation out there.”

That genuine care for customers is what makes Langs Smokes & Exotics feel less like a store and more like a welcoming space where questions are encouraged and education is the priority.

The mission became crystal clear during their first year when senior customers and their families came in searching for natural alternatives to prescription painkillers. One gentleman, facing hip surgery, was brought in by his children who wanted him to avoid strong and potentially addictive pharmaceuticals. Harsh sent him home with samples of pain relief gummies, and assured him that they’d find the perfect product to help him. When he returned with news that the products had worked amazingly well, Harsh knew they were making a real difference.

“That feeling right there was the best for me,” he recalls. “This is actually making a difference in people’s lives.”

Breaking Down the Stigma

Harsh is honest about the initial pushback. Early Instagram comments worried about smoke billowing into neighboring shops and negative influences on children. But the reality couldn’t be more different. Langs Smokes & Exotics is a safe, welcoming space for all ages, even families with kids are comfortable walking in.

Though they have a strict 18+ policy on purchases and diligently check IDs, kids that come in with their parents can explore exotic snacks from around the world. People can try new flavors from familiar brands like Nori Seaweed Lay’s, or experience something completely new like Chilli Chatka KurKure twists.

The idea stemmed from wanting to bring a little more diversity to the town and offer something that compliments the THC, Hemp and CBD items they sell. Harsh’s goal with both exotic snacks and cannabis is to make unfamiliar products more accessible to a wider range of people.

“I want people to know that cannabis, first of all, is not scary,” Harsh says with a smile. “It can be very, very fun, honestly. And it really opens up a whole creativity window in your mind.”

His own journey with cannabis helped him overcome anxiety and become more confident and social. When he saw his grandmother find relief from chronic pain through CBD products, his path became clear: he wanted to help others discover these natural alternatives.

A Personal Approach to Wellness

What sets Langs apart is the personalized care each customer receives. Harsh takes time to understand what people are looking for, whether it’s managing pain, improving sleep, reducing anxiety, or simply unwinding after a long day. He always starts with one crucial question: do you want THC or CBD? From there, he will match the customer with a product that is designed to target their specific need.

For the nervous or curious, he recommends gentle introductions like their one-milligram THC mints with five milligrams of CBD, which are so subtle you can go about your day while taking the edge off.

“Starting low is better,” he advises kindly. “You can always work your way up.”

A self-proclaimed cannabis nerd, Harsh does his homework. For those concerned about “fake” CBD products flooding the market, that’s not something you’ll find at Langs. He tests products himself, checks certificates of authenticity, and verifies lab results. He’s constantly looking into new brands, reading all of the reviews to make sure people love it.

“I really understand the cannabinoids, really understand how it works,” he said.

Not only does he study the efficacy of the products, Harsh has a deep understanding of what each ingredient does. This knowledge helps him match people to their product with less trial and error. When customers return saying they got the best sleep of their lives or found relief without getting high, it reinforces why this work matters.

Building Community Through Creativity

Beyond products, Langs has become a gathering place. They host sip-and-paint events, glass mosaic classes, and bracelet-making workshops, all featuring local LBI creators. The goal is simple: show the community that this is a safe, creative, comfortable space.

“At our first sip and paint, people came in not knowing how to paint at all,” Harsh remembers with a laugh. “They were nervous, but as they started consuming a little bit of the products, they got lost in painting and had no idea the class was almost done.”

They’re always looking for new ideas to bring people together and support other local artists and businesses. Harsh particularly loves hosting pop-up shops for arts and crafts type products, and is always on the lookout for LBI makers. Next up, they’re in search of an LBI-based comedian to perform in the shop. THC and comedy seem like a natural pairing, and that night will surely be filled with laughter.

“It’s fun to support them and they support us. I know that we could be looked down upon, like we’re sending the wrong message,” he shared. “The main goal here is to let people know that it’s a safe space.”

An Invitation to Visit

If you’re still on the fence about cannabis products, Harsh has a simple invitation: “Come in and talk to me. I can see exactly where your concerns are.”

He’ll recommend the most gentle products available and even explain the worst-case scenarios so you know exactly what to expect.

The worst that could happen with CBD? You might fall asleep. With a very low dose of THC? You’ll feel as relaxed as you would with half a glass of wine. Nothing to fear, just a natural path to wellness waiting to be explored.

At Langs Smokes & Exotics, it’s not about selling products. It’s about education, community, and helping people live healthier, happier lives. And in a world that can feel overwhelming, that kind of genuine care is exactly what LBI needs.

Langs Smokes & Exotics is located in Long Beach Island, NJ. Stop by to meet the family, explore their wellness products, or simply say hello. You’ll be glad you did.

If you’re part of any local Facebook groups in Ocean County, you may have seen Kathy Tindall and the beautiful shell art of Treasure Creations. What started as a retirement hobby has blossomed into a full-time passion that’s bringing handcrafted coastal art to homes across LBI and beyond.

From Plumbing to Picking Shells

Kathy’s connection to Long Beach Island runs deep. She first bought a house here in 2000 as a vacation home, though she’d been visiting since she was just 15 years old. After running a plumbing, heating, and air conditioning company for over 30 years, she retired three years ago and moved to Beach Haven West in 2019. That’s when everything changed.

“My husband was looking in the closet and found my collection,” Kathy laughs. “He said, ‘throw it out or do something with it.'”

That collection represented decades of beachcombing adventures. Growing up in Virginia and visiting Virginia Beach from an early age, Kathy had always been drawn to the ocean’s treasures. Once she started traveling the world with her husband, the collecting intensified. She estimates that at least 80 percent of her shells, sea glass, and driftwood comes from her own beachcombing, sometimes picking up materials multiple times a day wherever she travels.

Finding Her Happy Place

With no formal art background but experience as a seamstress that gave her excellent hand-eye coordination, Kathy started experimenting with shadow boxes. Her first projects were Christmas trees made from jewelry left behind by her mother, aunt, and mother-in-law, created as gifts for her daughters. When she shared photos on Facebook and local LBI groups, the response was overwhelming.

“It’s my happy place,” Kathy says. “Sometimes I start designing at 8 AM, then I look at my phone and it’s 4 in the afternoon and I haven’t left the table yet.”

Now 65, Kathy creates everything from angel wings to hearts, custom designs, and her signature shell-covered Christmas trees; pieces so beautiful that people leave them displayed year-round. Each creation is housed in a shadow box to keep everything protected, and no two pieces are exactly alike.

The Art of the Hunt

What makes Kathy’s work special is the personal connection to every material. She walks the beaches of LBI all year long, no matter how cold or windy, searching for treasures at Barnegat Lighthouse and Holgate, where the beaches are less-groomed and shells and sea glass are plentiful. She’s learned that New Jersey’s offerings change with the seasons. For instance, lighter, brighter scallop shells appear in winter and spring, while summer brings darker mussels in blacks, grays, and browns.

But her search doesn’t stop at the Jersey Shore. Kathy has built a network of trading partners across the globe. She has connections in Scotland, Greece, and Florida who help her find specific shells. Friends in Canada and Maine send thick mussel shells from colder waters. While traveling, she’s discovered that Hawaii offers the best sea glass, while Florida is prime for shells. She’s even found rare lavender sea glass, one of the hardest colors to locate, and large pieces of “pirate glass” in Puerto Rico and Florida.

Creating Art, One Shell at a Time

The simplest creation takes Kathy about 40 minutes, while more complex or larger pieces can require up to six hours. Her Christmas trees are particularly time-consuming, requiring careful layering of shells to create symmetry and balance.

“You don’t just throw them all on the tree,” she explains. “You need to find which shell will match in each spot.”

Her most popular items are angel wings; small shadow boxes with a poem on the back, often purchased as memorials for loved ones who have passed. Hearts are another bestseller, perfect for Valentine’s Day or simply as tokens of love.

Kathy also takes custom orders. When someone requested a lion head, she created it and ended up selling three more.

“It’s odd because I never know what’s going to sell,” she admits. “So I make one, put it on my Facebook page, share it with the neighborhood, and if it goes, I make more.”

A Growing Business Built on Passion

What started as a way to stay busy in retirement has grown exponentially, especially in the last six months. Kathy now considers it a full-time endeavor, though she tries to limit her hours. She’s planning a big open house pop-up shop at her home in November, and she’s always thinking ahead to the next season with creations like Mother’s Day shadow boxes that have sayings like “Mothers are like sea shells, a blessing to have and a treasure to hold,” or newly introduced tree toppers that have customers saying “OMG, when can I buy that?”

While she’s done a few craft shows with her friend Denise, who also creates beach-inspired art, Kathy has found that LBI and Beach Haven West are her best audiences. The community knows her, looks forward to her new creations, and often calls when they need a special gift.

Some people balk at her prices, but Kathy understands her value. “I do all the searching, walking, and cleaning before even making the pieces” she notes.

Many people try to make the designs themselves, only to come back when they realize the skill and time involved. For Kathy, the real reward comes from the compliments and knowing that someone loves her work enough to hang it in their own home or give it as a gift.

More Than Just Art

For Kathy Tindall, Treasure Creations is a way of life that connects her passion for beachcombing, her love of LBI, and her joy in creating something beautiful. Every piece tells a story of early morning walks along Holgate, of Hawaiian vacations spent hunting for red and cobalt blue glass, of heart-shaped rocks discovered in Maine, and of decades of memories turned into art.

“It’s an honor and it’s exciting to know that someone likes your creations so much,” Kathy reflects. And for those of us lucky enough to live in this community and see her work, the honor is all ours.

You know that feeling when you walk into a place and it just feels right? That’s Nardi’s for you. If you’ve never been to this Long Beach Island gem, you’re seriously missing out. And if you’re one of those regulars who’s been coming for years – well, you already know what I’m talking about.

How It All Started

Back in the ’70s, Nardi’s was once known as Caster’s. Then Bob Nardi bought it and, naturally, changed the name to Nardi’s. Fast forward to 2006, when John Brennan, who lived right down the street on Sunset Terrace and came in every Sunday night, took over.

His daughter Megan, who is now the General Manager, says it best: “My dad was in the bar one day talking to Bob, and Bob was saying how he was considering selling it to a builder. And my dad’s like, well, I’d rather keep it a bar.”

Can you imagine if this place had become just another row of houses? Thank God John stepped in. He worked seven days a week running his company on the island, but Sunday nights at Nardi’s? That was his thing. That was where he could just be himself, hang with friends, and be part of something special.

Two Places in One

Here’s what’s wild about Nardi’s: it’s like two different places depending on when you show up. During the day? Super chill. Families eating breakfast, people grabbing dinner, and maybe a solo acoustic guy playing in the corner. Nice and relaxed.

When 9 o’clock hits, it’s party time. Live bands, people dancing, and drink specials flowing. Megan puts it perfectly: “We always say when the lights go off at 9:00, it gets dark and we go into party mode.”

Best Bar Food in LBI?

Walking into into Nardi’s you might think, “It’s a bar, how good can the food really be?” Wrong. So wrong. This place will make you eat those words, literally.

Everyone raves about their Reuben, and yeah, it’s been a staple forever for a reason, but they’ve got so much more going on. Fresh fish every day, crab tostadas that are incredible, and this new Philly roast pork sandwich that’s just… chef’s kiss. Their chef is constantly switching things up and trying something new.

“We’re not just burgers, pizza, and cheesesteaks,” Megan says, “even though the cheesesteaks are really good.” See what I mean? They could coast on the basics, but they don’t.

Drinks That Actually Matter

Kelly, the other GM, is basically a drink wizard. Every season she comes up with a whole new list of cocktails. This Summer, everyone was obsessed with the watermelon mint martini and this tequila mojito that’s dangerously good.

But the real stars? The Pink Bus and LBI Pink Lemonade. Those are the drinks that make you go, “Okay, I get why people keep talking about this place.”

Every day there’s a new special going on. You’ll often find deals like $5 Nutrls and the Nutrl bike giveaway. Wednesdays are Miller Lite nights. After 9 PM? $3 green teas and white teas. There’s always something.

Live Music Every Night (Seriously)

Summer at Nardi’s is insane, they have live music seven days a week. At times they even double up and have two different acts in one night. During the off-season, the music keeps on going every weekend with legacy bands and exciting classics. The Dave Christopher Band has been playing there every Sunday for 25 years. Twenty-five years! This year they’re celebrating with giveaways and specials.

The party continues throughout the week. Karaoke on Mondays and Wednesdays gets crazy competitive. Thursday trivia nights? Good luck finding a seat if you don’t get there early.

That Pink Bus Everyone Talks About

You’ve probably seen it driving around; that bright pink bus that screams “Nardi’s.” Bob Nardi came up with the idea back in the day (though nobody knows why he picked pink, which honestly makes it even better).

The Nardi’s bus will pick you up anywhere from Holgate to Division Street in Ship Bottom, bring you to Nardi’s, let you have the best time ever, then drive you home. For free.

“We just try to make sure everyone gets home safe,” Megan says, and you can tell she means it. She’s literally walking around at night asking people, “You getting on the bus? You getting on the bus?” Because that’s what you do when you actually care about your community.

It’s All About the LBI Love

Here’s what really gets me about Nardi’s, it’s not just a business, it’s the heart of the community. Everyone who works there, everyone who hangs out there, they all genuinely love this island.

“Everyone that’s here has a love for LBI,” Megan explains. “It’s a small island and a lot of people know each other. And we all make sure that everyone is thriving.”

The Rotary Club meets there every Thursday, and they’re constantly working on programs to help the community. Local businesses support each other. People actually look out for one another. It sounds cheesy, but when you’re there, you feel it.

Tourists vs. Locals (But Make It Friendly)

Summer brings the tourist crowds, which is great; more people discovering what locals have known forever. But the off-season? That’s when you see the real Nardi’s. That’s when it’s mostly the year-round folks, the people who chose to make LBI their home, gathering at their favorite spot.

And honestly, both crowds are welcome. That’s the beauty of the place.

Big Things Coming in 2026

Nardi’s is turning 50 in 2026! Megan’s already working on what sounds like is going to be an epic celebration. She’s trying to get Bob’s wife Bev involved (who sounds absolutely lovely), bringing back old bands, and celebrating current favorites.

“I’ve started planning,” she says, and you can hear the excitement. “Watch out for new information on our website and social media.”

September on Long Beach Island offers something that the peak summer months simply cannot: space to breathe. Beach parking becomes readily available, restaurant reservations are easier to secure, and you can actually walk the length of the beach without navigating around dozens of umbrellas and chairs. The weather remains warm and inviting, but the frantic energy of July and August gives way to a more relaxed, contemplative atmosphere.

This is when locals reclaim their island, rediscovering favorite restaurants without long waits, enjoying peaceful morning beach walks, and reconnecting with the natural beauty that makes LBI special.

As we head into the final stretch of the 2025 summer season, businesses across the island are rolling out end-of-season specials and events that celebrate both the conclusion of another successful tourist season and the beginning of the island’s most authentic time of year.

Local Summer Exclusives

The best perks of Local Summer: cars and dogs are welcome on the beach in the off season!

Secure a Beach Buggy permit and drive your car right onto the beach at one of the designated entry points. No more lugging things around! Drive up with your fishing gear, camera equipment or all the kids beach toys. Check out the Vehicle Beach Access Guide for more information.

After October 1st, every beach is a dog beach! Bring along the pup for a walk and a swim. Dogs must be leashed and please clean up after them!

When people think of party pedal bike tours, bachelorette parties in Nashville usually come to mind. Admittedly, as a local I didn’t think I’d ever try this. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to tag along on a PedalCycle tour, which was a surprise birthday party, and had one of the best afternoons of my summer.

The Experience

During the two-hour tour, your group will cruise around the streets of Beach Haven with your favorite playlist pumping through 4 built-in, Bluetooth speakers, friends laughing and pedaling alongside you, and everyone you pass waving, honking, and taking photos of your rolling party.

The bike makes 3-4 stops depending on how well groups manage their time at each location. “If they run a little bit longer at a place, then we shorten the amount of stops that they make,” Julie explains. “And everyone’s usually really cool with it because they’re having a good time.”

The route showcases some of Beach Haven’s most beloved establishments, each offering something unique:

Tucker’s Tavern features an impressive rooftop bar that provides great views and atmosphere

The Sand Bar serves up “the most delicious food” and regularly hosts live music

Sea Shell Resort & Beach Club is famous for its consistent live music scene – “everyone loves the shell. The shell has live music all the time. It’s always exciting to be there”

The Black Whale offers its own distinct neighborhood bar vibe

Bird & Betty’s serves as the perfect finale to the experience

“All these places are staples of the island, and I just think it’s a really fun route,” Julie notes. The selection makes sense both geographically and experientially. Since PedalCycle can’t drive on the boulevard but can cross over it, this particular block provides the most time-efficient and enjoyable experience possible.

My PedalCycle driver, Julie, sees experiences like mine regularly. From the outside, it’s easy to underestimate the experience.

“I think you don’t realize how much fun you’re going to have,” explains Julie, who joined the team for the first time this summer during her off time from teaching. “Everyone’s like, ‘oh, I don’t want to work for it,’ but you’re listening to music, you’re hanging out with your friends, you’re meeting new people, you’re exercising, and you’re outside.”

That’s the magic of PedalCycle. It transforms what could be just another bar crawl into an interactive, social experience that gets everyone involved. The multi-person bike accommodates groups while creating an instant party atmosphere that’s impossible to replicate in a car or on foot. Everyone is involved, even the people you pass on the street.

The Story Behind the Fun

While the concept has been rolling through Beach Haven since 2018, current owner Sal Fiore Jr. brought fresh energy to the business when he purchased it this past June. Having previously expanded operations to Seaside Heights last year, Sal was drawn to PedalCycle for a simple reason: he was looking to be in the fun business rather than running a traditional needs-based or brick-and-mortar operation.

This seemed fun and he knew the old owner, which made the transition natural. When Sal took over, most of the partnerships with bars on the tour route were already established, giving him a solid foundation to build upon. The carefully curated route isn’t random. Each stop is chosen for its location and the fact that they had an outdoor element that complements the PedalCycle experience.

The Vibe is Everything

What truly sets PedalCycle apart isn’t just the bars or the bike, it’s the energy it creates. The bike is a vibe. Everyone on the street is always taking pictures or videos and waving and honking. The music is going. The mood changes when you’re on the bike.

This isn’t an exaggeration. The PedalCycle has become a Beach Haven attraction in its own right. Pedestrians stop to watch, cars honk in approval, and phones come out to capture the fun. You’re not just participating in an activity, you’re creating a spectacle that spreads joy throughout the neighborhood.

The music element adds another layer of personalization and fun. “Some people come with a playlist and they want to connect to the Bluetooth, and they can play the whole time,” Julie explains. “Sometimes they’re just like, ‘I like everything.’ And then you’re just trying to find things that they’re like… it can be really fun trying to figure out what people like to listen to. And then you throw in something that maybe they didn’t realize that they loved. And then all of a sudden everybody’s dancing on the bike and it’s fun.”

When talking about vibes, I need to shout out the group I was with, because their energy gave the tour +100 aura points. (Julie assured me this is what the kids are saying). They organized a game where each seat had an assigned number and they asked everyone on the street to guess a number from 1-10. The person sitting in the seat number they picked had to drink. It was a tough day to be number 7, but the game added an extra element of excitement and brought everyone into the experience.

Designed for Everyone

Worried about the physical demands? Don’t be. All the bars are staples of the island and pedaling is only a little tough when going uphill, but if everyone pulls their weight it’s fine. “If there’s a small group, it does become more challenging. The more people you know, the easier it is. But it’s not a hard thing to do,” Julie reassures potential riders.

For those who want to participate without pedaling, PedalCycle has you covered. There are also seats with no pedals for those who can’t. The bike has four non-pedaling seats total with two on the sides and a bench seat in the back that fits two people. “Sometimes people switch around, you know, you’re not stuck in the same seat” throughout the experience, making it accessible and comfortable for everyone.

The experience even works in less-than-perfect weather. “You can do it in the rain. As long as there’s no lightning or anything like that,” proving that the fun doesn’t have to stop when New Jersey weather gets unpredictable.

Not Just for Tourists

While visitors love the novelty of PedalCycle, it’s become equally popular with locals looking for a fresh way to experience their own backyard. As someone who recently tried PedalCycle for the first time, I can honestly say I had so much fun unexpectedly because it’s not something I thought to do.

Julie herself is a perfect example of the local connection. She’s a full-time teacher who usually did remote jobs during the break. She was “looking for a summer job that would get me outside and meeting people.” After getting sick of being in front of the computer, she discovered PedalCycle on Facebook and fell in love with the concept.

“I said I was going to try it out and I just loved it,” Julie recalls about her conversation with Francesca, who had been driving the bike since around 2016 or 2017. This local connection runs deep. The drivers know the island, understand the vibe, and genuinely enjoy sharing their favorite spots with both visitors and fellow locals.

Why PedalCycle Matters to LBI

In a world of standard tourist activities, PedalCycle offers something genuinely unique. As the only business of its kind in New Jersey, it gives visitors and locals alike a reason to see Beach Haven from a completely different perspective. It’s not just about the bars or the drinks, it’s about the shared experience of being part of something joyful and memorable.

For visitors, it’s an instant introduction to Beach Haven’s personality and hospitality. For locals, it’s a fresh way to experience familiar places with friends. For everyone involved, it’s a reminder that sometimes the best experiences come from trying something completely different.

Ready to Roll?

Whether you’re planning a birthday celebration, a bachelorette party, a family reunion, or just want to shake up your typical evening out, PedalCycle delivers an experience you literally can’t get anywhere else in New Jersey.

Looking for something extra special?
In a sea of traditional ice cream parlors that line Long Beach Island’s coastline, one family business stands apart by bringing the authentic taste of Hawaii to the Jersey Shore. Ohana Hau, which means “family snow” in Hawaiian, represents something beautifully unique on LBI; a genuine fusion of island cultures that speaks to both wanderlust and deep local roots.

Their 16 signature combinations can be customized however customers desire, but the real magic lies in trying flavors that simply don’t exist anywhere else on LBI. Where else can you taste li hing mui or experience the creamy perfection of haupia-topped tropical shave ice?

A 16-Year-Old’s Vision Comes to Life

The story of Ohana Hau begins with Summer Sprague, a remarkable 16-year-old who carries the distinction of being a 14th generation LBI local. The Sprague family has been here in since the beginning, for over 300 years. The tradition of caring for LBI continues with Summer and her mission to bring something new to the island.

While most teenagers might dream of leaving their hometown, Summer found inspiration by bringing the world to hers. During family surf trips to Kauai, Hawaii, she discovered something magical: authentic Hawaiian shave ice.

“When I first tried it in Hawaii, I just thought it was the coolest thing ever,” Summer recalls. “I was like, man, I don’t know how I feel about ice cream anymore. This is so cool.”

That moment of pure enthusiasm sparked an idea that has now become a thriving family business in its third season. What struck Summer wasn’t just the refreshing treat itself, but how different it was from anything available on LBI.

“Since we always have a lot of ice cream shops around every corner, I wanted to do something different,” she explains. “I decided I wanted to incorporate shave ice into our town and see how it does.”

A Family United by Surf and Snow

The Sprague family’s connection to Hawaii runs deeper than typical vacation memories. Adam Sprague, who teaches science at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science program during the off-season, shares his daughter’s passion for surfing. Their annual trips to Kauai aren’t just getaways, they’re pilgrimages to perfect waves and authentic Hawaiian culture.

This shared love of surfing created the perfect foundation for understanding what makes Hawaiian shave ice special. Both father and daughter experienced firsthand how the island’s laid-back surf culture and the refreshing tradition of shave ice are beautifully intertwined. When they return to LBI’s surf breaks, they bring that Hawaiian spirit with them.

“We try to get there every year and sample as many places as we can,” Adam explains. “So absolutely, we’re always bringing something different and new.” This commitment to continuous discovery ensures that Ohana Hau remains not just authentic, but evolving.

Aimee Sprague, co-owner of Ovations Performing Arts Academy in Waretown, completes this creative family trio. Together, they’ve built something that honors both their Hawaiian inspiration and their deep LBI heritage.

Authenticity in Every Shave

What sets Ohana Hau apart isn’t just the novelty, it’s the commitment to authenticity. The family imports their machines directly from Hawaii, which were originally made in Japan. This connection honors the historical roots of shave ice, which Japanese sugar plantation workers introduced to Hawaii in the 1800s, sweetening it with sugar cane and local fruits.

Every element is crafted in-house with meticulous attention to detail. They create their own block ice using reverse osmosis filtered water, make all their syrups with no high fructose corn syrup, and offer gluten-free options. Their signature macadamia nut ice cream base features fresh roasted nuts, while their house-made haupia cream (coconut cream) adds that authentic Hawaiian touch.

The flavor combinations tell the story of their Hawaiian travels. Traditional options like lilikoi (passionfruit), lychee, and li hing mui (dried plum with a tangy twist) transport customers to the islands. Their number-one seller, the “Summer Breeze,” layers macadamia nut ice cream with mango, lilikoi, and guava, finished with haupia cream captures the essence of both Summer’s vision and their Kauai experiences.

More Than Shave Ice: Building Community

While the authentic Hawaiian flavors draw customers in, it’s the family’s genuine warmth that keeps them coming back.

“I think it’s really nice getting to know our customers and talking to them and the regulars,” Summer shares. “It’s just a really nice environment.”

This community-focused approach extends to their hiring practices. Many of their staff members are students from Aimee’s dance academy or friends of Summer’s.

“We’ve had really the same staff since we’ve opened, which says a lot,” Adam notes proudly. “They pretty much just run the show all the time.”

Generations of Island Life

What makes Ohana Hau’s story particularly special is how it represents the best of both island cultures. The family’s deep LBI roots, spanning over a dozen generations, give them an intimate understanding of what the local community craves. Their Hawaiian inspiration provides the perfect complement to LBI’s beach culture, offering something cooling and refreshing that feels right at home among the dunes and surf breaks.

The fact that this vision came from a teenager who chose to enhance her hometown speaks volumes about both Summer’s character and LBI’s enduring appeal. She saw an opportunity to bring something beautiful and authentic to the place she loves most.

The Taste of Two Islands

When you visit Ohana Hau, you’re not just getting a frozen treat, you’re experiencing the convergence of two island cultures and the realization of a young entrepreneur’s dream. Every spoonful carries the story of Hawaiian sugar plantations, Japanese innovation, Kauai surf trips, and generations of LBI family tradition.

In a world where authenticity can be hard to find, Ohana Hau offers something real: a family business built on genuine passion, cultural respect, and deep community roots. It’s proof that sometimes the most innovative thing you can do is honor tradition.

Visit Ohana Hau and taste the difference that authenticity makes. Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, you’ll understand why this family’s Hawaiian-inspired vision has found such a perfect home on Long Beach Island.

Mahalo to the Sprague family for bringing a little piece of paradise to our beloved shore!
